  • Dear Scholarship Applicant,

    For 118 years, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, the first collegiate fraternity for African American men, has been dedicated to developing leaders, promoting academic excellence, public service, and social responsibility in our local and global communities. To facilitate these goals, the Mu Sigma Lambda Chapter of the fraternity is offering one-thousand-dollar ($1,000) scholarships to graduating high school men who are pursuing higher education.

    Scholarship recipients will be selected based upon academic achievement, financial need, community service, and on an original essay. Carefully review the scholarship requirements. An incomplete application will not be considered. Please feel free to copy and distribute this letter and the attached application and requirements to all persons interested in applying for a scholarship.     Applications must be received no later than March 20, 2025.

    Applicants are encouraged to apply before the deadline even if you are waiting for admission to the college or university of your choice and or have not decided on which college or university that you will attend.

    Applications that are not received by the deadline and applications that are incomplete will not be considered.

    In addition to the form below, Applications and official transcripts can be submitted to hearonnorman@gmail.com. If the application is submitted this way, official transcripts must be sent separately by an official from the applicant’s school. Applications and official transcripts can also be mailed to the address below.  The official transcript must be in a sealed envelope from the school providing the transcript and included with the application materials.

    SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS

    ELIGIBILITY:

      1. The applicant must be a male student who is a graduating high school senior for the 2024 academic school year. The applicant must be a student at a Southern California high school.
      2. The applicant has or will enroll as a full-time college student at a four-year college or university in the Fall, 2025 term.
      3. The applicant must possess a minimum grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.0 or its equivalent.
      4. The applicant must provide proof of acceptance AND enrollment in a four-year college or university before funds are disbursed. If selected to receive an award, proof of enrollment must be received no later than October 7, 2025. Failure to adhere to this deadline will result in forfeiture of your award.
      5. Children of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. members (regardless of chapter affiliation) are ineligible to receive a scholarship.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    1. The applicant must provide ALL of the following:
      1. An official transcript that includes the applicant’s grade point average. The instructions for submitting the transcripts are as follows:
        By Mail: The transcript must be provided in a sealed envelope from the school providing the transcript AND it must be included with the completed application materials.
        By Email: The official transcript must be sent by an official from the applicant’s school.
      2. TWO letters of reference from persons who can attest to the quality of your class work, ability and character. At least one of the two letters must be from a current or former teacher.
      3. Complete responses to all of the questions on the application form.
      4. A 200-word essay on “How I Will Use My Education to Serve My Community”.
      5. A wallet sized photograph of you.
      6. Proof of acceptance to a four-year college or university. This must be provided with the application materials. Please note, this may not be the college or university that you ultimately choose to enroll in Fall 2025.
      7. Proof of enrollment in a four year college or university should you be selected to receive a scholarship. Scholarship funds will not be disbursed until proof of enrollment (e.g. registrar’s receipt) is received by the Mu Sigma Lambda Chapter of the fraternity.
